MESKEL Celebration

Thousands gather each year in September at Meskel Square in the centre of Addis Ababa. They pray, sing and watch the burning of a large bonfire (Demera) on the eve of the Meskel holiday. Meskel is a religious holiday for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and is a commemoration of the discovery of the True Cross by the Roman Empress Helena in the fourth century. In many neighbourhoods in the city and throughout the country, smaller bonfires are also lit.
